Brief Summary -- Lina is just like any other fifteen-year-old Lithuanian girl in 1941. She paints, she draws, she gets crushes on boys. Until one night when Soviet officers barge into her home, tearing her family from the comfortable life they've known. Separated from her father, forced onto a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest reaches of Siberia. Here they are forced, under Stalin's orders, to dig for beets and fight for their lives under the cruelest of conditions. (Amazon)

I have read multiple books about the Holocaust and the plights of the Jewish people during WWII, but this book is the first I have ever read about the persecution of Christians in WWII Russia,

I don't very much like history, but this novel isn't just a story about the holocaust. it's a story about a girl. she loves, she loses, and she endures, but most of all, she perseveres. it's beautiful, sad, tragic, and spiritual. one of my favorites.

I like the strength of the main character in this book. The best part is the struggle against the oppression and evil, which she does through her art. Also, the fact that Ruta Sepetys used her own heritage and history to create this book--I love her books so much!

I like how honest the author was, and how descriptive the book was.

AuthorMy name is Katie Moisant and I am one of the 2 Librarians at Oakland High School in Murfreesboro, TN. Mrs. Hays (my fellow "book whisperer") and I love talking about books we have read -- the good, the bad, and the ugly! I am excited to hear from the OHS students, faculty, and staff about what books they have read and their thoughts on those books.... Archives
